The first liberation was on July 23-24, 1944. The camp was called Lublin-Majdanek and it was liberated by Soviet forces. On January 47, 1945, “Soviet forces liberated Auschwitz”, one of the most famous concentration camps ("Commemorating Liberation").
Although it seemed like a happy and joyful time, liberation was very brutal. Soldiers found many that were starved and unable to move. Some were very sick. They found mass murder graves and gas chambers. Soldiers found “hundreds of thousands of men's suits and more than 800,000 women's outfits.” ("Liberation of Nazi Camps"). Soldiers found lost items such as bracelets and watches. Survivors faced a hard and difficult recovery. Many survivors and soldiers were scarred and had to go through months and months of therapy.
